Eastern Hemlock Flower Essence

Eastern Hemlock is an ancient Tree that is native to the northeastern US and into Canada. Ki* grows slowly and can live for well over 600 years, though many of the old growth Hemlocks have been logged. Eastern Hemlock Flower Essence shares ki’s ability to navigate many Earth changes, helping us to negotiate change with grace, embracing the natural rhythm of change as a part of life.

Healing Gifts of Eastern Hemlock Flower Essence

Change is a natural part of life, though often we fear change, even when we say we want it. Our modern life tends to favor static, homogenization, where change, especially through the lens of aging is meant to be fought. Yet, as we connect with Nature, we recognize that there is a rhythm to everything. Sometimes that rhythm is slow, like a Tree’s lifecycle or the eroding of a Rock and other times that rhythm is fast like a Fruit Fly’s lifecycle.

Eastern Hemlock Flower Essence helps us to embrace change as a natural part of life. If we are faced with unwanted changes perhaps divorce, loss of job, our children growing up, or something that impacts our sense of identity, Eastern Hemlock Flower Essence helps us to navigate these with grace and ease. As we let go of trying to control the shifts, we discover adaptability, flexibility, and perhaps even appreciate the gifts that come with the changes. Eastern Hemlock supports our root chakra and connection with Earth and reminds us that we are safe while gently guiding us through the change(s).

As part of ki’s gift of navigating change with grace, Eastern Hemlock is an important Flower Essence to help us thrive during the major Earth changes we are experiencing. While our landscapes are quickly shifting with climate change (whether by fire, flood, tornadoes, or other methods), Eastern Hemlock Flower Essence helps us to find our footing, connect with Earth, and get centered so that we can respond appropriately.

Eastern Hemlock Spirit Essence is an incredible support Essence for anyone navigating death, whether that is struggling with the aging process, grieving the death of a beloved, or facing your own mortality or fears around dying. Eastern Hemlock says, “Death is not an ending, but a transformation.”

What Eastern Hemlock Wants for You

Eastern Hemlock asks you to let go of the reins, holding on too tightly magnifies the struggles. Ki says, “Watch the tops of my Trees during a storm. We bend, we sway, sometimes we even let go of needles or branches. We know that rigidity courts disaster. It is through our flexibility that we survive and perhaps we even learn to enjoy the dance, after all it’s fun to let loose and be wild from time to time.”

Eastern Hemlock encourages you to embrace transformation. It is through transformation that you evolve, becoming your true self. There are many lessons and gifts that can be experienced through transformation. Real death occurs when you stop changing, stop transforming, stop evolving, when you become too rigid, unwilling to grow and learn, causing your Spirit to wither and your Light to dim. You begin to live a shell of a life, which one could question if that is even living.

It’s okay to be fearful as you are faced with change. Though know that I’m here to support and guide you. Together you can find the courage to navigate the challenges with grace and ease. Who knows you may learn to love change or at least appreciate the opportunities change creates.

Making of Eastern Hemlock Spirit Essence and the Power of Sacred Sites

Eastern Hemlock Spirit Essence (Tsuga canadensis) was made in a sacred grove of old growth forest at Alan Seeger Natural Area near State College, PA. Some of the Hemlocks are several hundred years old and have a 4 foot diameter because this incredible forest was ignored by loggers.

Eastern Hemlocks naturally quiet a forest as their needles create a soft cushion. They also create a moist, cool environment which is quite comfortable on a hot day. Walking into Alan Seeger evokes a sense of awe and reverence as these ancient Trees tower over you and gorgeous Mosses carpet their feet.

This is one of my favorite places to visit and spend time. Among the Hemlocks, time seems to stand still and my breathing deepens as my body relaxes. Magic is everywhere. Just thinking about this place brings tears of gratitude and recognition of the Sacred.

The magic and sacredness of this place potentizes the incredible healing gifts of Eastern Hemlock, providing the support of the Ancients, those who have navigated many Earth changes.

In recent years, the Hemlock trees have been quietly disappearing from our landscape. They are dying from climate change as well as the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, a small insect that sucks the nutrients from Eastern Hemlocks. I am reminded of Hemlock’s message that death is a transformation from one form to another and yet, surely we can support these Ancient Trees who have done so much for humanity. If you see an Eastern Hemlock send them Love and thank them for their generosity.

*Ki is an animistic, genderless third person pronoun which recognizes the aliveness of our more-than-human kin. To the best of my knowledge, in her book Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer was the first to suggest using ki.
