Cedar Flower Essence
Cedar is also known as the Tree of Life or Arborvitae. Cedar Flower Essence helps us to align with life force energy, enlivening us and strengthening our vitality, giving us a little spark or joie de vivre. Cedar is one of my favorite allies for engaging in ancestral healing. Ki1 is a great support for recovering from grief or deep heartbreak.
Healing Gifts of Cedar Flower Essence
Cedar is a long-living, ancient Tree. Ki’s Essence helps you to connect with ancient wisdom including awakening and remembering the knowledge in your bones. This Essence is an incredible ally for engaging in ancestral healing work. Cedar helps to strengthen your connection with your ancestors while also healing the ancestral wounds, releasing the burdens, and smoothing any disagreements or inherited grudges. Cedar helps to clear the epigenetic patterns that are blocking you from your path. Working with Cedar Essence we feel the Love and support of our ancestors (including those we found problematic.)
Cedar Essence also supports us in becoming a good ancestor for the future generations, reminding us that we are the connection between our ancestors and our descendants. The healing work that we engage in affects both the previous and the future generations. We are creating the world of the future and support the evolution of our descendants. [To be clear, descendants is meant as a broad term, not simply blood relatives, for we are related to all and our actions impact many generations.]
Cedar Spirit Essence provides support during the grieving process, helping to find our footing and remember the Love we experienced. Cedar encourages us to carry-on and enjoy life. This grief support includes recovery from Heart breaking or soul crushing traumatic experiences, such as incarceration, war, or abuse. We can mark our life by these experiences, knowing that we are a different person afterwards. Cedar Essence helps to clear the trauma including the shame and again encourages us to return to the world of the living, to find ourselves and our joy again.
If we know that we are entering one of these traumatic experiences, such as going to war, Cedar Flower Essence can provide protection helping to lessen the impacts. Ki is a good protective Plant and is particularly helpful if we or a space is feeling haunted or inundated with Spirits.
When we are feeling depleted or worn-down by the world, Cedar Essence helps to center us and fill us with vitality by aligning us with life-force energy. In this way, Cedar Flower Essence may help us to find our passions and our purposes. We feel a little spark of excitement and joy as we work with Cedar Flower Essence. Ki helps us to calm, take a deep breath, and enjoy the incredible gift of life.
What Cedar Flower Essence Wants for You
Cedar Flower Essence wants you to feel empowered and alive, filled with vitality. Ki wants you to delight in the beauty and gifts of life, remembering that you are connected to all and have great access to guidance and support.
Cedar wants to help release the burdens that you carry, especially those you have inherited. Ki says, “Lay them down, let them go, these are not yours, nor were they ever meant for you.” Ki encourages you to move through life, free to be yourself and follow your Soul path, reminding you that you carry deep wisdom within your bones.
Sometimes our problems feel so large, we cannot imagine another way or even see the possibility of them ending. Cedar Flower Essence shows that in the bigger picture, these are mere blips. Ki wants to help tune you to this broader timeline so that you do not get lost in the struggle. Instead you can see the lessons or gifts as well as the time when this blip no longer registers in your awareness. Cedar offers us hope for our future.
Mantra & Keyphrase of Cedar Essence
I AM MY ANCESTOR’S DREAM
Pausing for a few moments to breathe and say this mantra while taking Cedar Flower Essence can help with the embodiment of the Essence. Cedar offered several mantras. Others to consider: “I am alive with vitality;” “I offer healing to my ancestors”; or “I am aligned with life-force energy.”
Ways to Use Cedar Flower Essence
Cedar Flower Essence can be taken as a dosage Essence over the course of a month or possibly longer if needed. This method is especially helpful if recovering from grief or engaging in ancestral healing. Brigid’s Way sells stock level Essences. For instruction on how to dilute and use a dosage Essence, see our Essence FAQs.
Taking 1 drop of the stock bottle of Cedar Essence before engaging in ancestral healing ceremony, meditating, or going on a shamanic journey may support your experience. Here is information for exploring Essences with shamanic sound journeys.
If feeling depleted or overwhelmed, taking 1 drop of the stock of Cedar Flower Essence can act like a little pick me up. I like to take this while sitting or standing and feel into my roots. I stay here for a couple minutes feeling this connection and the support of Cedar. Sometimes I feel energy pouring in through my head. You could even imagine a golden light pouring in through your crown chakra.
Cedar Flower Essence can be included in a spray bottle for protection. I add 12 drops of the stock Essence to a 2 ounce spray bottle filled with 50% vodka and 50% purified water. (The vodka acts as a preservative without adding much aroma.) Other protective Essences can be added to this mixture which is then sprayed around a room or a person. Saying prayers and asking for protection while utilizing the spray helps to potentize the effects.
You can also place Cedar Spirit Essence directly on the skin for protection (being careful not to touch the dropper, which can cause bacteria to grow.) For protection, I like to put a drop at the nape of my neck, my inner wrists, my ankles, my Heart, and my 1st eye (commonly referred to as 3rd eye).

The Story of Cedar
Cedar, Arborvitae, Northern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) is an ancient Tree native to Northeastern United States and Canada. Thuja plicata grows in the Western US and Canada and has very similar healing properties to Northern White Cedar. Both Trees are greatly revered and recognized as good medicine by the Indigenous Peoples of these places.
Cedar Trees are long-living. A Northern White Cedar was estimated to be 1890 years old, though the oldest known living Cedar is approximately 1300 years old, growing in Ontario. Cedar is an evergreen with flat scales as needles. The scales or needles are a good source of vitamin C, which was very important during the cold winter months. These attributes led to Cedar’s distinction as the Tree of Life (Arborvitae). Cedar was considered to help keep life going.
Grandmother Cedar fosters connection with the ancestors, acting as an intermediary. Part of the Cherokee cosmology is a story about the creation of night and day. While the correct balance was being discovered, many people died. In response, Creator created Cedar, placing the spirits of the departed in the Tree. Thus, Cedar contains the ancestors.
The Anishinaabeg say that Cedar (Nookomis-gilzhik) opened and maintains the line of communication between humans and our other kin, thus providing guidance when humans are in need.2 Cedar also ties the physical world to the spiritual world, again facilitating communication and support.
Cedar’s roots grow in a pattern that mirrors the growth of ki’s branches. Thus Cedar is considered an image of balance. Ki also reminds us that what happens in the seen world also occurs in the unseen, in other words: above and below, within and without, the micro affects the macro. All things are connected.
Cedar helps us to reconnect with Earth, finding our rightful place as part of Nature. This is especially important when we have lost our way or have forgotten our sacredness. During this time of great awakening, Cedar can guide us in finding another way, creating a more loving and just world where all Beings are honored.

- Ki is an animistic, genderless third person pronoun which recognizes the aliveness of our more-than-human kin. To the best of my knowledge, in her book Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer was the first to suggest using ki. ↩︎
