How to Find Your Spiritual Plant Ally

Life can be wonderful, beautiful, challenging, exhausting, and so much more. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have someone we can turn to when we are in need, who gives us guidance or helps to ease the situation? A spiritual Plant ally can provide that for us.

We may not like to admit it, but we all need a little help from time to time. Mostly we look for this help from other humans. If we are spiritually inclined we may ask for support from the Divine or Angels or our Spirit Guides. We can also receive guidance and support from Nature including in the form of a spiritual Plant ally. Having a Plant ally means that no matter what, we are never alone. Discovering who your Plant ally is, is truly life changing. Let’s explore what a Plant ally is and how you get one.

What is a Plant Ally

A Plant ally is a Plant with whom you have formed a special relationship. Usually this Plant has shown up in your life for some reason: offer guidance, provide healing, answer a request . . . As you get to know them, your relationship deepens and expands, ideally to the point that you can call on them anytime, anywhere and have access to their wisdom and support. They become a true Beloved.

Plants are our evolutionary allies. They have been on this planet for much longer than humans and have continued through many Earth changes. We are alive because Plants (and Algae) provide a hospitable environment, providing the oxygen that we need to breath. Of course, our food and medicines also derive from Plants. As the Indigenous have always known and as science is proving, Plants are intelligent and capable of communication. While we can have relationships with any aspect of Nature, Plants have agreed to be our ambassadors, guiding us and welcoming us back into our sacred role as part of Nature, helping to heal our relationships with our more-than-human kin, and helping us to awaken to who we are.

Our relationship with our Plant ally continues to unfold throughout our life. Plants continue to grow and evolve, they also meet us where we are. So the gifts or wisdom that they share with us tends to be relevant to what we are experiencing at that time. As we continue to grow and heal, our Plant ally may offer other guidance or show us new ways of working with them.

Once we have forged this deep connection with a Plant (really with the  Plant Spirit), we can connect with them even when they are not physically there. Which means that if we are in danger or experiencing pain or struggling in some way, we can call on them and our Plant ally will offer support or guidance. Perhaps they provide protection, calm our energy, help us to see something we missed, or offer something else. Truly the possibility of their support is endless.

Who is My Plant Ally

Your Plant ally is personal to you. Ki* is the Plant that is stepping forward to support you at this time. When I teach Plant communication workshops, often each person discovers a different Plant ally. Though in Plant Initiations, we all develop a relationship with the same Plant, our initiator. While we are working/playing with the same Plant, we each have different experiences and develop very different relationships with ki. Just like would happen if we are all friends with the same person. No two relationships are the same. These different experiences with the Plant initiator demonstrate the many facets of Plants and their ability to meet us. Regardless of our experience, our connection grows with our Plant ally as we engage in the various ceremonies during a Plant Initiation, until there is no separation. We will carry this Plant with us throughout our lives.

You can have different Plant allies for different needs or roles. For my healing work, I have numerous Plant allies to support my clients. For instance Mugwort helps to clear and move energy, St. John’s Wort helps to support a client’s aura and enliven their Soul force energy, and Tulsi helps to bring back missing Soul parts. As my healing practice continues to grow and evolve, new Plant allies come forward to help me support my clients’ needs. Most people do not need to have as many Plant allies. Though for my personal life, I’ve had Plant allies who helped me find Heart Springs Sanctuary, recognize future partners, and then I’ve had some Plant allies who simply feel like great support, like I can lean on them and they help me to remember myself.

While your relationship with your Plant allies are lifelong, you may find that some have a more prevalent role in your life at different times. For instance, I have a Plant ally who has long been a Love of mine; however, they started to become one of my main Guides around two years ago. Their presence and guidance is a consistent part of my days. This particular Plant ally helps me to stay in my Heart while encouraging me to bring joy and playfulness into my work and life. Years ago, when I was in the abyss of deep grief, Rose became my main Plant ally, helping to heal my Heart and bring me back together. Ash was my main support and Guide while I was leaving and recovering from an abusive relationship. Rose and Ash remain dear Beloveds and I continue to call on them and work with them as needed; however, they are not as present in my daily life as they were during those previous time periods. (Well, Rose continues to be a major ally for my healing practice.)

Finding My Plant Ally

Finding your Plant ally requires good observation. We begin the search by asking for a Plant ally, letting the Plants know that you would like to be in relationship with them. This seems so simple and yet, the request is what opens the doorway, similar to dialing a number in order to call a friend. If you have a specific need or issue that you would like help with, ask for a Plant who can help with this. Then pay attention. Are there any Plants who are calling you? Is there a Plant that you are attracted to or is there a Plant that you suddenly see everywhere? Does the same Plant “pop up” in multiple circumstances. If so, this may be your Plant ally.

Though just because a Plant is popping up, doesn’t make them your ally. They become your Plant ally by engaging with them and developing a relationship. This is similar to the difference between an acquaintance and your best friend. An ally is someone you know you can rely on to have your back. Spend time communicating and connecting with your Plant friend. (If you would like suggestions, Communicating with Plants has numerous exercises to connect with a Plant.) As you connect with them, you begin to understand some of the gifts of this Plant. Remember that all good relationships are an exchange of energy (as opposed to being one-sided). So honor your Plant friend. Give them offerings, sing to them, or ask if there is something that they need/want. Sometimes the Plants simply want our attention.

This time connecting and getting to know your Plant friend is the foundation for your relationship. When you have at least a glimpse of the gifts or guidance they are offering you, call on them as appropriate. For instance, if this Plant is going to help you with abundance, ask for their support before applying for a job or marketing a program. Or if they are helping you to find a place to live, ask for their guidance as you visit a property. Our Plant allies are very generous and happy to help us, usually we need to let them know that we would like their guidance and support.

The more you call on your ally, the more your relationship deepens and grows. You develop a sense of trust and recognize how your Plant ally is supporting you. Of course, this support may not appear the way you want it to or think it should. But it time, you will see that this was exactly as it was meant to be. For instance, a client who was struggling with someone at work asked a Plant ally to help the situation, thinking that the other person would get moved to a new department. Instead, my client lost their job. They were surprised at the outcome, but not upset because they ended up finding a better work environment.

How Do You Call on a Plant Ally

People often ask what it means to “call on” a Plant; what does this look like exactly. It depends on the situation. Sometimes, it means saying out loud, “Yarrow, help me with ____.” Other times, we may say the request internally, thinking: “Mugwort please help to calm my energy.” Or perhaps we picture our Plant ally or remember the sensation we feel when we connect with them or assume a posture. You may also want to wear your Plant ally in some way or carry a piece of them with you. We are bringing their presence into our awareness, like calling our friend. And then asking for the help or guidance that we are looking for.

Having a Plant ally respond during a time of duress is such an incredible gift. Like the time that I had a dental emergency on the weekend and my dentist was in bed with the stomach flu. I had to go to a practice that I didn’t trust and was in considerable pain, finding it hard to stay embodied. I finally thought to ask for Mugwort’s help. As soon as I said the words, I felt my energy calm, the pain greatly lessened, I was more present, and even more, the hygienist’s energy also calmed.

However, we can also call on them simply because we want to spend time with them. Maybe we bring them into our meditation or call them into our awareness as we dance. Sometimes I like to call on them as I travel. I feel like they bring another layer of magic to my journeys. I find that often synchronicity increases.

Can I Have Other Allies

There is no limit to the amount of allies you can have. You may have animal, gem, or Angel allies. You may have Faerie, Dragon, or Mountain Spirit allies. You are almost guaranteed to have Ancestral allies. You may even discover that you have allies of Plants or other Beings who do not exist in this world (at least not physically). There is so much support and guidance available to us, if we simply ask and pay attention. Really the Universe conspires to help us create the life and world that we desire.

Get to know your allies, spend time with them, and again, remember to share your gratitude and appreciation with them. They support us more than we will ever know. At this time of Earth changes and paradigm shifts, we need our allies to help us find our way. Our spiritual Plant allies show us that we are never alone and are so incredibly loved. In fact, they often introduce us to unconditional Love and help us to learn how to truly Love another.

I wish you many blessings on your journeys with your Plant ally. If you would like to experience engaging in ceremony with a Plant ally among a community of people, join us for the Plantain Plant Initiation.

*Ki is an animistic, genderless third person pronoun which recognizes the aliveness of our more-than-human kin. To the best of my knowledge, in her book Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer was the first to suggest using ki.
